A unique color introduction. Just like a chameleon, these exotic orchid-like blooms actually change color. The unique, ever-changing flowers are borne on compact plants that remain tidy and controlled, unlike some nasturtium varieties.

Easy for children and beginners, this half-hardy annual fits nicely in both cottage and exotic gardens. And since the edible flowers have a peppery flavor and make bright garnishes and bold, colorful additions to dishes, the plant is always welcome in kitchen gardens, too. But nasturtium also provides a valuable service to the vegetable garden as a sacrificial crop, luring away aphids from vulnerable varieties, such as runner beans and French beans.

To sow, pick a sunny spot, rake ground until soil is fine and crumbly, removing any weeds and stones. Sow in rows 12 inches apart and ¾-inch deep, or scatter seeds, cover lightly with soil, and water in. Water regularly until plants are fully established. Once established, nasturtiums require little attention.

Plants can also be started indoors and planted outdoors after the risk of frost has passed. If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant.
